Alonzo King’s rich family history is closely linked to that of the African-American struggle for both political and social equality. His father, Slater King and his uncles, attorney C.B. King and Preston King, are known as Americans of great accomplishment, who by their lives and their actions inspired and advanced the cause of U.S. civil rights. His mother, Valencia King Nelson, counts among her many achievements the creation of AfriGeneas, an organization dedicated African-related ancestry. His cousin Oona Tamsyn King was elected to Parliament in 1997 (the second black woman to achieve this status), and was selected as one of 100 Great Black Britons that year.
