Alonzo King's LINES Ballet
In Performance with the
Shaolin Monks
Music performed live by
Melody of China
MAY 28 - JUNE 1, 2008
With utter calm and fierce precision, the dancers of LINES Ballet and the
Shaolin monks of China return to create an unprecedented synthesis of
Eastern and Western classical forms.
"Watching these two groups together,
kung fu begins to look more like art for its
own sake, and ballet like self-defense, and
you begin to wonder if perhaps both are
fighting forms after all -- fighting for a life
of truth and beauty that all humans crave."
-- San Francisco Chronicle

Pharoah Sanders World Premiere
Pharoah Sanders, the famed tenor saxophonist who played
with John Coltrane's jazz ensemble in the 1960s, shares
Alonzo King's philosophy that art can express a truth:
something underneath the surface, something deeply held in
the soul.
"The spirit tells me what to do and that's it,"
Sanders says of creating music for LINES Ballet. For
Alonzo King, "Dancers are musicians, and musicians
are dancers--they're making music with their bodies."
