1982 - LINES Ballet premieres at the McKenna Theatre 1984 - The Company performs Ictus at the Los Angeles Olympic Games 1985 - LINES Ballet receives its first grant from San Francisco's Grants for the Arts program 1987 - The Company makes its New York debut at the Riverside Dance Festival 1988 - The Company receives its first grant from the Hewlett Foundation. The Hewlett Foundation becomes the company's largest funder and supporter 1989 - The San Francisco Dance Center is inaugurated and grows into one of the leading dance facilities on the West Coast 1989 - The Company returns to Los Angeles with the Black Choreographers Festival 1989 - LINES Ballet receives its first Isadora Duncan Award (one of five) for Outstanding Achievement in Company Performance 1990 - LINES Ballet is the first American company invited to perform at the Prague Modern Dance Festival in Czechoslovakia - this begins the Company's international touring 1990 - Ballet Philippines premieres Alonzo King's Ligeti Variations 1990s - Alonzo King appointed Arts Commissioner for the city of San Francisco 1991 - The Joffrey Ballet premieres Alonzo King's Lila and Prayer at Lincoln Center's State Theater and Alonzo receives national critical acclaim 1991 - The Washington Ballet premieres CantÉ and the Hong Kong Ballet premieres Toccata in D Minor 1992 - LINES Ballet celebrates its 10th Anniversary with performances at the Cowell Theater and the Joyce Theater in New York (the first of many Joyce performances) 1992 - William Forsythe's Frankfurt Ballet premieres Without Wax 1994 - The first Company performance at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where home season performances have taken place ever since 1994 - The first collaboration with Pharoah Sanders Ocean; a history of collaborating with well-known musicians and composers begins. Performing with him were Hafida Ghenim, Bouchaib Abdelhadi and Yassir Chadley 1994 - San Francisco Unified School District's School of the Arts moves its Dance Program to the San Francisco Dance Center, where it has made its home ever since 1995 - The Company's first Central American tour to Guatemala 1995 - Dance Theater of Harlem premieres Signs and Wonders at Brooklyn Academy of Music and it becomes a signature piece for them 1996 - Dance Theater of Harlem premieres Alonzo King's Ground at the Kennedy Center 1998 - Alonzo King creates two master works, Who Dressed You Like a Foreigner? with music by Zakir Hussain and TARAB with a Hamza El Din score 1999 - Company dancer Lauren Porter receives Princess Grace Award (first of five LINES dancers to be recognized with this honor) 2000 - Alonzo King creates the original work Following the Subtle Current Upstream for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, which becomes a signature piece for Ailey on international tours 2001 - The LINES Ballet School and the LINES Ballet Pre-Professional Program are established to develop the potential of young dancers 2001 - The People of the Forest collaboration with the BaAka people of Central Africa becomes a national sensation 2001 - LINES' first residency at Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project, with the BaAka 2002 - LINES Ballet moves from its Oak Street home to the historic Odd Fellows building on Market and Seventh 2002 - LINES Ballet celebrates its 20th Anniversary season 2005 - The film Alonzo King goes to Venice is shown at the Lincoln Center Dance Film Festival 2005 - The film Alonzo King goes to Venice is shown at the Dance Camera West Film Festival at the Hammar Museum in Los Angeles 2005 - City and County of San Francisco proclaims Alonzo King's Day in San Francisco (the first of many such proclamations) 2005 - Alonzo King is honored with New York's coveted BESSIE Award for Choreographer/Creator 2005 - Alonzo King is named a Master of African-American Choreography by the Kennedy Center 2005 - Alonzo King is awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Dominican University of California 2005 - Jill Nunes Jensen's Doctoral Dissertation, Re-Forming the Lines: A Critical Analysis of Alonzo King's LINES Ballet is published by UMI 2005 - International touring is brought in-house, marking a major milestone for the company and the start of the company's consistent international touring presence 2005 - Eight LINES Ballet performances in Lyon are sold out during the Maison de la Danse's 25th Anniversary Season 2005 - LINES Ballet performs at the Venice Biennale at the Pala Fenice 2006 - LINES Ballet embarks on a partnership with Dominican University of California, inaugurating the Joint BFA Program in Dance; this is the only Joint BFA program in the country led by an active, world-renowned choreographer 2006 - Company dancer Laurel Keen receives Princess Grace Award and the Chris Hellman Award, a special honor for high artistic excellence 2006 - The newly formed United States Artists organization recognizes 50 outstanding living artists in America; Alonzo King is awarded one of only four Fellowships in Dance nationwide and the only one outside New York 2007 - Karina Epperlein's film Phoenix Dance, starring dancer Homer Avila with choreography by Alonzo King, was one of eight documentaries "shortlisted" for an Oscar nomination for Best Short Documentary 2007 - Spring home season collaboration with Shaolin Monks from China attracts record numbers in San Francisco Bay Area 2007 - Alonzo King is awarded an Honorary Doctorate and Robert Rosenwasser receives a Distinguished Alumni Award from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) 2007 - Alonzo King is honored with the Community Leadership Award for 2007 from the San Francisco Foundation 2007 - Company dancer Meredith Webster receives Princess Grace Award, as well as the Chris Hellman Award 2007 - Alonzo King's LINES Ballet celebrates 25 years of creation, innovation and collaboration! |
