Student Spotlight: Learn more about current BFA students
Furthering the aim of Alonzo King LINES Ballet in the re-invigoration
of ballet (Western Classical Dance), the BFA in Dance utilizes ballet
as its foundational language, complemented and augmented with extensive
training in past and current forms of Modern dance, as well as studies
in Ethnic dance.
A significant portion of each semester is devoted to the study of the choreography of Alonzo King, taught by many of the dancers on whom the works were originally created. Choreographers from within the vibrant Bay Area dance community and abroad are invited to set works on the students and share their points of view.
Improvisation and Composition studies are placed throughout the program to support and inform a strong emphasis on individual responsibility and exploration in the creative process.
The four- year program offers multiple opportunities for student performance, and culminates in a full production of student-choreographed work.
The program incorporates extensive study in the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM ® to cultivate knowledge and practical tools towards maintaining a healthy body while expanding individual movement potential. In a unique partnership with San Francisco Gyrotonic, one of the foremost centers for Gyrotonic training in the world, LINES/Dominican BFA in Dance students will be eligible to certify as Gyrotonic trainers upon graduation with the addition of one outside course.
